Skyr is the traditional yogurt of Iceland that has been made for over 1,000 years. It is a strained non-fat yogurt. It is made by incubating skim milk with live active cultures. Then the whey, the water naturally found in milk, is strained away to make for a much thicker, creamier and concentrated yogurt. It takes four times the milk to make one cup of siggi’s compared to regular yogurt.
siggi’s skyr is made based on an age-old Icelandic recipe but we practice our craft in Yates County, New York and Richland County, Wisconsin.
Yes, all of siggi’s dairy products are certified kosher; we are certified by the Orthodox Union.
siggi’s is not yet certified organic, however we use milk from grass-fed cows and work with farms that do not use any kind of growth hormones such as rBST. All of siggi’s products are all natural, made with non-GMO ingredients, and without artificial sweeteners or coloring. We keep our ingredient list simple and ensure that our products are made with the best, non-GMO-verified ingredients.
Research indicates that probiotic cultures are ‘friendly’ bacteria that may have various beneficial attributes for human health. For example, they may help improve digestive health and potentially boost immunity.
The liquid that can occasionally be found on top of yogurt is whey. Whey is simply the water in milk/yogurt. A slight separation of whey from the yogurt is totally natural and nothing to worry about. When that happens you can either stir the whey back in for a smoother yogurt or pour it off. The whey contains some minerals and nutrients including calcium and some whey protein. Our yogurt can occasionally have this slight separation because in order to keep our ingredients to a minimum, we do not add any starches or stabilizers that might prevent this type of separation from happening.
We use organic pomegranates that have more of a pinkish hue and when they are crushed into our yogurt with the passion fruit and the plain white yogurt, the subtle colors of the fruit kind of fades out. Although we could add coloring, whether natural (beet juice) or unnatural (red 40 dye), we firmly believe in keeping our products ingredient list minimal and close to its natural state. Look at similar milk/yogurt products and see if their red color comes from the fruit itself or from beet juice or other type of colorings to compare.
We do recommend that you enjoy any siggi’s dairy products by the “best before” date listed on our packaging.
The specks that you see in our vanilla flavored products are actually specks of real vanilla bean from the Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla we use!
We work with family owned and operated farms who feed their cows grass, however they are not all fed a 100% grass diet. Their diets are supplemented with a 100% vegetarian diet which typically includes alfalfa and human-grade grains.
We currently do not offer any tours of our farms or facilities at this time.
We want to keep any sugar in our products, even if natural, to a minimum. siggi’s products are lightly sweetened with organic agave nectar or cane sugar, then there is also a bit of sugar that naturally comes from the fruit that we add. We do not use any artificial sweeteners or high fructose corn syrup.
siggi’s cups and bottles are made from recyclable #5 plastic. We’ve created an easy tear-off label so that you can recycle the plastic cup and paper label separately.
Yes, all our products are gluten free. They contain no wheat, barley, rye, or triticale, and we do not use gluten as a food additive in the form of a flavoring, stabilizing or thickening agent. Our products are certified gluten-free by the Gluten-Free Certification Organization (GFCO).
When making skyr, we start by making a base that is kind of like regular yogurt. Then we strain the whey, the water in milk, and wind up taking about 75% of that water out. This means that to make one cup of skyr we require about 4 times the amount of milk required to make a regular cup of yogurt. As a result of this process, skyr contains 2-3 times the protein count of standard yogurt.
Our yogurt products have less than 3% lactose in each serving as much of the lactose is removed along with the whey during the straining process.
siggi’s products do not contain nuts. We do make a Coconut yogurt, though siggi’s production lines go through certified process to ensure that there is no cross-contamination between products.

The corn in the feed is not at present time certified non-GMO, and we continue to monitor the availability of non-GMO corn and other feed options.
